Decaf Chai

People in the Post-Holidays Guilt-Free Cleanse group were talking about making chai, and I thought - that's exactly what I need! I love getting soy chais when I'm working at a cafe, but I can't do that this week since I want it to be decaf.

I have this killer recipe, from a classmate at UMass in our educational video production class a few years ago. He made a how-to video for chai and since then I've never been disappointed with homemade chai! Here it is below:
Chai Tea Masala mix from India Sweets and Spices

Kenny's Chai Tea Recipe:

  • Boil 1.5 cups of water in a stainless steel pot
  • When it is heating up, add a couple pinches of masala spices (see picture below of Tea Masala mix from India Sweets and Spices)
  • When the water is boiling, add the tea (2 teaspoons of black, or a bag of decaf green, which is what I used)
  • Let that boil for 15-20 seconds
  • Add sugar, honey or agave to taste (I used honey)
  • Let that boil another 15-20 seconds
  • Add 1 cup milk (soy milk, almond milk, coconut milk)
  • Bring that back to a boil, and then you are ready to serve it!

My favorite spots for a soy chai around home are:
Graffiti Sublime Coffee on La Brea and 2nd Street
Paper or Plastik on Pico and Ogden
(and don't ever get the chai at Venice Grind!! terrible..)
